Time to reconsider Van Zyl Slabbert electoral reforms 08:57 14/09/2018  Serjeant at the Bar There has been much talk in the media recently about the electoral system that operates in this country and the related question whether its reform might not produce a more accountable, transparent democracy. It appears to be common cause that the present system bestows enormous powers on the “party bosses” who organise the electoral lists for their respective political parties. As a result, Members of Parliament are accountable to the party and not in any direct way to the voters. In addition the president, who in terms of the Constitution is possessed of enormous powers, is elected by the vote of the majority party in the National Assembly. Although upon this election, the

Change to a better governance system

The New Nation Movement is NOT another Political Party – it is much more than that. It is a GOVERNANCE MOVEMENT, aiming to usher in legitimate change to South Africa’s political system, to a TRULY DEMOCRATIC system, amongst other things. Whats the difference? Governance:  Refers to policies, and continuous monitoring of their proper implementation. This includes the mechanisms required to balance the powers of the officials,  their accountability, and duty to enhance prosperity and viability of the government. Politics:  refers to the activities, actions, and policies that are used to gain and hold power in a government.  Igniting an Awakening! It’s time the people of South Africa realize that they have a Constitutional right to elect Leaders themselves to represent them in Parliament and other

Can independents run for national SA elections? ConCourt says yes

On June 21, the Constitutional Court delivered a landmark ruling that affirmed the voter’s right to be informed about who was funding political parties and independent ward candidates. The court found that the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) was unconstitutional, and that it did not provide for the disclosure of information on private funding that a party or candidate received. The judgment in the main dealt with issues brought by NGO MyVoteCounts on citizens’ rights to be informed going into an election, so that a voter could make political choices. However, in one

Governance, Not Politics

The New Nation Movement is not a political movement, but a ‘governance movement’ by the people, for the people. Shared values are what unites us and ethical nation-building is what mobilises us. Governance in all spheres of society, including politics, shapes the agenda. The goal is to ‘repurpose’ South Africa through aligning every sphere (Education, Economy, etc.) with shared values. We, the people, commit to ethical nation-building and our values form the standard for this (see the Bill of Values). Now, concerning the political space, the movement creates two opportunities to bring change through: 1. Promoting the Van Zyl Slabbert Report of direct representation by the people in Parliament. This would restore the missing link of ‘accountability’ in politics, and also change the whole system
